The Magical Unemployment Rate Drops to 5.9

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The mid-term elections are upon us, and with all of the failures of the Obama administration, the Democrats had to think fast.

An unemployment rate under 6% should be enough to get the leftist voters up in a giving mood, and out there to vote for their favorite Democrat.

Except, the rate is all a lie.

According to the Labor Department, U.S. employers added 248,000 jobs in September (that will be revised later, as it always is, but they figure you won't notice the revision).  How many of those jobs are government jobs?  How many are part-time or temporary?  How many jobs have been lost?  And if the rate is so low, how is it that the labor participation rate is at a 36 year low, with a record 92.6 Americans not in the labor force?

The Obama administration claims they have done the job.  The unemployment rate hasn't been this low since Obama first manipulated the numbers down in July of 2008.

With the rate so low, there are consequences.  Now, there will be pressure for the Federal Reserve to increase the interest rate, one of the mechanisms that has been holding our sick economy back from collapsing.

Could this be in preparation for a GOP win in 2016?  Maneuver the rates in such a way that when the Republican takes office, it all falls apart?

Wages have not gone up, there is no growth, the number of people not in the labor force is at a record high, yet the sorcerers in Obama's regime somehow pulled off a 5.9 unemployment rate.

Never mind that they don't count people who fall off the unemployment rolls because they never found a job during the time period they are eligible for unemployment benefits, or small businesses that went under but the entrepreneurs can't get unemployment benefits because they were never technically employed.  Remember, they don't count.  Those people are forgotten.  They would, however, be a part of the calculations if a Republican was in office.

The real unemployment rate is over 20%, yet we are being told it is at a six year low.  The U6 Unemployment Rate is around 12%, and it is even lower than reality.

President Barack Obama has been touting his administration's economic achievements, figuring to make the economy the top issue in voters' minds as the November elections near.  It is a great ploy to get everyone's minds off of all of the scandals, and authoritarian unconstitutional actions by the administration.

"Sure, we murdered four Americans in Benghazi by leaving them there to die, and sure we have been arming the very same rebels that became ISIS, oh, and yes, Obamacare is a dismal failure, and we use the NSA and the IRS to go after our enemies, but hey, look, the unemployment rate is below 6%!  Stare at the 5.9.  You are getting sleepy.  You are under our power.  Go vote democrat in November."
