Abraham Lincoln's Birthday: Executive Expansion of Powers
Douglas V. Gibbs: "February 12 is Abraham Lincoln's birthday. But while we recognize his honorable moments, we must also realize his progressive ones. While claiming to support the Constitution, he also drastically expanded executive powers. He was a good man in an unenviable position that chose to be progressive in his handling of the turbulent times of his era. Was his progressive strategies necessary? That is a debate that is still being waged to this day. The repercussions of his actions that led to a dangerously expansive executive branch, however, are undeniable."
