Brian Williams’ Katrina Stories Now Under Fire After Iraq Fib

by JASmius

Maybe not to utterly malevolent, black-oily-soul-of-pure-evil Dan Rather proportions, but still fairly noteworthy for his evident Kerryesque fantasist solipsistic resume botox injections:

NBC anchor Brian Williams apologized on Wednesday for falsely claiming his helicopter was downed by an RPG during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and now many are actively fact-checking other extraordinary claims from over the years, including a notable one regarding Hurricane Katrina.

On Wednesday's Nightly News, Williams publicly apologized for his "bungled attempt" at thanking soldiers for protecting him in Iraq.

"I made a mistake in recalling the events of twelve years ago," he said. "I want to apologize."

In other words, he got away with that whopper a dozen years ago and forgot that he'd ever told it, or had actually come to believe it himself.  Either way, he's apologizing now, as opposed to way back in 2003, because he got caught now.  Had he not, he wouldn't be saying peep #1 about this.

Remember the old saying, "Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we endeavor to deceive"?  This is what happens when one pulls on a stray loose thread: the whole mendatious tapestry begins to unravel:

Under heavy scrutiny less than twenty-four hours after Williams' admission are his tales from Hurricane Katrina.

Oh my gawd, do tell, do tell:

In one story, he claims he saw a body float by his hotel room window in New Orleans. In another, he claims his five-star hotel was overrun with gangs while he was sick with floodwater dysentery, and was rescued from a stairwell by a police officer.

Williams recounted the first story about the floating corpse in a 2006 interview with former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, the New Orleans Advocate reported.

"When you look out of your hotel room window in the French Quarter, and watch a man float by face-down, when you see bodies that you last saw in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, and swore to yourself that you would never see in your country . . ." Williams said, recounting the 2005 hurricane. "These are Americans. These are my brothers and sisters and one of them was floating by."

The likelihood that a body would be "floating by" in the French Quarter neighborhood is highly unlikely, as several news outlets noted that there was no flooding thereit sits at one of the highest elevations in the city.

Another blogger noticed a story Williams told not long after the storm.

"My week — two weeks there — was not helped by the fact that I accidentally ingested some of the floodwater. I became very sick with dysentery. Our hotel was overrun with gangs," Williams said in an interview with Tom Brokaw. "I was rescued from the stairwell of a five-star hotel in New Orleans by a young police officer. We are friends to this day."

Williams doesn't appear to have told the story ever again, but did say in a subsequent Dateline special that the police in New Orleans used the Sheraton hotel as a staging ground for their operations, and that they allowed his film crew to film outside. [emphases added]

<sigh>   I'm no psychiatrist, nor do I play one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  So I can't really claim to "get" this relentless, ubiquitous media/leftwing compulsion to MSU (the "S' doesn't stand for "stuff," in case you were wondering).  I suppose I might be able to get my mind around exaggerating, within plausible reason, things that actually did happen, but fabricating events that never happened in order to generate artificial ego-stimulants by making oneself "part of the story"?  In the words of Yoda, "identify with that, I cannot".

But, of course, I can analyze it, even if I don't have a spare couch upon which I would allow any stranger to recline.  It's very simple, really, something we on the Right already tiresomely know: It's all about The Narrative.  "Lyin' Brian's" "I was shot down in Iraq" fib (an improvement, I must say, upon Hillary Clinton's dubunked claim that she was merely shot at twenty years ago in Bosnia) is just a symptom of this Obamunist mental illness.  But "bodies floating by my New Orleans hotel window" in floodless quarters of the Crescent City goes right alongside "ten (or was it twenty?) thousand corpses piled up in the Louisiana Super Dome like firewood" and other Bush Derangement Syndrome-fueled urban legends about the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.  And what does Brian Williams or any other lib care if it finally emerges, a decade later, that it was all bovine scatology?  It got them what they wanted: the destruction of George W. Bush, the electoral decimation of the Republican Party, and an irreversible "fundamentally transformative" presidency-for-life.

So don't expect "Lyin' Brian" to suffer any consequences for what should be a total forfeiture of "jouranlistic" credibility.  Remember the right tribe/wrong tribe rules: They get to lie, whereas we're "lying" no matter how much we tell the truth.

Even money says he gets a hefty bonus and a book deal out of it.
