ISIS in North Africa: Egypt Strikes Libya in Response

By Douglas V. Gibbs

ISIS has released video of 21 Coptic Christians being slaughtered, and Egypt's military has responded, launching airstrikes against ISIS-affiliated militants in Libya after a video showed the mass beheading.

Egyptian warplanes targeted weapons caches and training camps before returning safely, a strike that was designed "to avenge the bloodshed and to seek retribution from the killers."

Libya's air force has also launched strikes within its own country against ISIS affiliated groups, striking the eastern city of Darna, which was been under the control of an Islamic State affiliate since last year.

ISIS, which controls about a third of Syria and Iraq in a self-declared caliphate, has created alarm in Europe with the presence of its group in Libya, because it means that the Islamic terror organization that has shown to be much worse than its predecessors in the terms of visible brutality, has established a direct affiliate less than 500 miles from the southern tip of Italy.  ISIS militants in the video in question makes a direct reference to plans to "conquer Rome."

While the Obama administration has called the beheadings "despicable" and "cowardly", the White House refuses to make any connection to the violence of ISIS to Islam.
