Questioning Iraq

By Douglas V. Gibbs

When America invaded Iraq, it was a bi-partisan effort.  Both political parties believed it to be a wise move, for Saddam Hussein was a tyrant, and he either possessed weapons of mass destruction, or he has the ability to produce weapons of mass destruction.  After the war began, however, the Democrat Party found it to be politically expedient to change their minds, to go against the war they originally supported, and then to accuse President George Bush of waging an illegal war.  They became the anti-war activists of the 1960s, and the strategy worked.  The Democrats came to the point that they believed their own bull crap.  Now, the republicans have drank the same poison.

There were definitely errors involving Iraq.  War is something that should be quick and decisive.  The Iraq War dragged out longer than it should have.  And pulling out as we did created a vacuum, one that would eventually be filled by a strong force, one stronger than the fragile government we left behind.

The truths and lies are of no concern to leftism.  The propaganda is all about deconstruction.  All or nothing.  Paint it as a total disaster, and then use that to make President Bush seem like an incompetent nincompoop - as if that will draw your attention away from the even larger failures of President Barack Obama.

Was Iraq a complete failure?  I don't believe so.  Was it a mistake invade Iraq in the first place?  Not if we'd conducted the war as we should have.  The mistake was not if, it was how.

Now, the GOP has decided to begin questioning Iraq, to show they are more like the Democrats, as if acting more like your political enemies is supposed to be good for a campaign.

In the end, the caving Republicans are simply showing us how they are pawns, and the leftist Democrats are moving them at will.

This was never about Iraq, anyway.  For the Republicans, it was about war.  For the Democrats, it was about politics.  For Islam, it has become a battle cry.  They would have found one, anyway.  That is what they do.
