One U.S. enemy after another to whom Barack Obama has apologized and has aided, recognized, embraced, reached out in the "spirit of friendship" and a "fresh start" to establish a "new dialogue" and a "new beginning" gives him a wedgie while laughing in his face and he keeps citing each episode as a triumph and vindication of his foreign policy vision and inflates his unimaginable ego to even more mammoth proportions.
In other words, just another day in the Oval Office:
General Leopoldo Cintra Frias, head of Cuba’s Armed Forces, recently visited Syria to lead a group of Cuban military personnel joining forces with Russia in their support of Assad, according to information received by the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies.
On Wednesday, a U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that Cuban paramilitary and special forces units are on the ground in Syria, citing evidence from intelligence reports. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Cuban troops may have been training in Russia and may have arrived in Syria on Russian planes…
An Arab military officer at the Damascus airport reportedly witnessed two Russian planes arrive there with Cuban military personnel on board. When the officer questioned the Cubans, they told him they were there to assist Assad because they are experts at operating Russian tanks, according to Jaime Suchlicki, the institute’s executive director…
“If this information about the presence of Cuban troops in Syria now is confirmed, it would indicate that General Raul Castro is more interested in supporting his allies, Russia and Syria, than in continuing to normalize relations with the U.S.,” the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies said in a statement Tuesday. [emphases added]
And why wouldn't he? The Castros know that Barack Obama won't do anything about this latest humiliating bitch-slap betrayal; they know that relations with the U.S. have ALREADY been "normalized," something The One is never going to undo; and they know that O will so entrench the new "special relationship" between the two "frenemies" that if there's ever actually a Republican successor inbound in 2017, even an anti-Castro hardliner like Marco Rubio won't be able to change that perilous and odious dynamic.
I'm genuinely baffled as to why Allahpundit is so genuinely baffled about this. The Castros flipped both bird barrels at the U.S. for over half a century. They did so long after their Soviet benefactors fell, and then their protege Hugo Chavez croaked, long enough to see the rise of a POTUS that was a friend, ally, and fellow-traveler who would give them everything they ever wanted, and for "free". They've pocketed all his foolish concessions and kept right on doing what they've been doing for the half-century-plus: Supporting their allies and giving us the middle-finger salute. The Cubans were loyal footsoldiers of the old Evil Empire, and clearly they're loyal footsoldiers of its successor. Nobody should have expected any other outcome but this one.
And since it's a cinch that Czar Vlad has big geostrategic plans for that island ninety miles off Florida's southern tip, financed by all the economic assistance the U.S. lavishes upon Raul and Fidel, I highly doubt that the latter have anything to fear from "alienating" us, as though such a thing were even possible and had any practical consequences to it.
One more time: This is the Obama Doctrine and "Smart Power" in action. This is what sixty-two million Americans twice voted for. The 1970s are calling and demanding THEIR foreign policy back.
Barack Obama simply will not let it go.
