Stephen Maxner, speaking for us all:
PotentialRepublican presidential candidate Jeb Bush shared pancakes and coffee at IHOP with local retired generals and military veterans....
Bush was welcomed warmly on Monday, but not everyone was pleased to see him.
“He’s politicking. This is a conservative stronghold, this is a swing state, and we have to stop him. I think he should be booed to Republicans at any chance. He should be shamed out of the race,” said Stephen Maxner, a Colorado Springs resident who visited IHOP to speak his mind about Bush’s potential run for the presidency.
“Bush expressing his points of views to the veterans is wonderful, but he should not run for president,” said Maxner.
Kind if illustrates two things I frequently point out: (1) Just because you hear somebody give a speech and agree with everything they say doesn't make that somebody presidential timbre; and (2) There is only one political dynasty in this country, and its name is Obama.
But, again, let's be mentally aberrant optimists and assume that The One exiles himself from power in 653 days, and, accordingly, that there is a 2016 campaign and a 2016 election. That leaves the question of "Why Jeb Bush?" What's the rationale or justification for a fifth Bush candidacy and third Bush presidency in just over a quarter-century? That it's Jeb's turn? That the family business must be carried on? That a bird in the hand is worth three in the Bush? That the American voting public will never get tired of pubic hair jokes? Call me wacky, but I don't think any of those arguments will be all that persuasive to the GOP nominating electorate, much less the larger voting public.
In fact, can we not all just agree here and now that Jeb Bush is unelectable? Consider Pappy Bush's high-water mark: 53.4% of the popular vote, 426 Electoral Votes (1988). Then consult Bush43's apex: 50.7% of the popular vote, 286 Electoral Votes (2004). Anybody besides me notice a distinctive trend here? Simply in linear terms, Jeb would be looking at a "personal best" of 48.0% of the popular vote and 146 Electoral Votes. And the next in line, George P. Bush - "Bush, The Third Generation" - would stare down the barrel of a ceiling of 45.3% and six Electoral Votes. The Bush generation after that would be in negative territory. And the one after that would be left dangling from lampposts.
Enough, already. Find something else to do, Jeb. Break the RINO cycle. That's what Mr. Maxner is saying.
And trust me, Governor, he's far from alone.
We've got the shaved bushes to prove it.
