Immigration Laws Protect U.S. From Disease

By Douglas V. Gibbs

A year ago, when the protests regarding the federal government's delivery of illegal aliens into Murrieta was going on, I had the opportunity to explain on a number of media outlets that the reason for immigration laws is to protect the receiving population from disease, criminals, and a terrorist element that may be crossing the border if all persons are not properly screened.  My position was for the protection of my community, and my loved ones.  Later, on al Jazeera America on December 30, 2014, I explained the same thing.

Now, it is no surprise to me, that tuberculosis is now being recognized as being on the rise in the United States.  I have no doubt in my mind the dangerous disease is spreading in the United States as a result of the federal government's policies regarding illegal immigration.  This development places myself, my family, and my community at risk.  Do we not have a right as Americans to demand that the federal government abide by the laws that are on the books, and strengthen border security, as well as the government's position regarding immigrants illegally crossing the border?

According to Brietbart, San Diego cases of tuberculosis are double the national average.  The San Diego Health and Human Services Agency indicates that “TB cases born outside of the United States comprised 70% of San Diego County’s cases. Of the 154 cases born outside the United States, 70 (45%) were from Asia (including 38 from the Philippines, and 13 from Vietnam), 66 (43%) were from Mexico, and 7 (5%) were from Africa.”

Europe has been seeing a resurgence of TB after seeing long-dwindling numbers of cases, a result that may also be directly influenced by illegal immigration.  Some European countries are seeing up to 80 percent of their TB cases occurring among migrant populations. African and Russian regions have particularly high levels of TB.

In Murrieta, after the incidents last year, we have been informed that some of our Border Patrol agents have been diagnosed with TB.  The southwest border has seen exponential increases for years bringing the issue to media headlines and greater public awareness last summer in our neck of the woods.

Measles is also noted as a disease that typically comes into the U.S. from foreign countries. Considered eliminated from the U.S. in 2000 according to public health officials, a measles outbreak did occur at Disneyland in Anaheim, California last December.
