Troops, Toys, Bridges, Obama, and a prideful tribute to the USMC

According to about every source on the net and in print, the American Troop's death toll in Iraq during the month of July is the lowest in 8 months. This may be yet another key piece of evidence that the surge in Iraq is working. Understand, as a conservative, I still believe that even the 73 deaths of Americans in Iraq is 73 too many, and I would love it if we could bring all of our fine young men and women home. However, reality dictates that a rapid pull-out of American troops could turn Iraq into a vast region of bloodshed, and create increased strife for the Middle East. Also, it is important to note that the troop increase has tamped down violence in Iraq and during the Global War on Terror there have been no successful terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

Mattel has recalled nearly a million toys manufactured in China due to a lead risk. This comes on the heels of numerous other problems with Chinese-made products such as toy parts filled with kerosene, choking hazards on rattles, as well as pet food, pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. One wonders if this free trade was such a good idea in the first place. Personally, I was against NAFTA from the start, and this is just another piece of evidence that global free trade without the proper regulations is hazardous to us in ways more than when it comes to our economy and the rapid loss of American jobs to foreign nations.

In Minneapolis a bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River. The report had the death toll originally at nine, but later reports have it at four. The collapse of the bridge occurred during rush hour traffic, plunging dozens of vehicles into the river and roadways below. My prayers are with all of those affected. My Point Radio has a video taken seconds after the collapse.

Barack Obama said Wednesday that with the terrorist insurgency occurring in Pakistan that he would possibly send troops into that country to hunt down terrorists. Okay, let me get this straight, this is the man that was against going into Iraq in the first place even though intelligence confirmed the need to, and claims that Iraq is a sidestep from the War on Terror because Iraq didn't attack us (well, neither did Afghanistan or Pakistan - they were Saudis if you'll remember - how quickly we forget that Bush indicated that the war on terror was to be waged upon all nations that harbor, finance, and train terrorism). Note that the presence of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been confirmed and many leaders of the terrorist group in Iraq have been captured and/or killed. Don't get me wrong, I am not completely disagreeing with his thought that it might be prudent to expand the War on Terror to Pakistan (it is a worry in that country not only because it is common knowledge that Osama has been believed to be hiding in the hills of Pakistan, but also because of Pakistan's nuclear capabilities which in the hands of extremists would be very dangerous to our security). I am making this point because it seems contradictory to his prior speeches about the dangers of using military force and regarding his all-around condemnation of the War on Terror, or at least it's handling in regards to being expanded to countries other than the campaign that is also currently being waged in Afghanistan. Don't forget, as well, that though a extremist insurgency is brewing in Pakistan, the government has long been allies to the U.S.
