Environmental Backfire

Long-time readers of Political Pistachio will remember when I wrote about how the fuel efficiency standards of the 1970s backfired. Under government pressure the automobile makers downsized vehicles, making them less safe in the case of an accident. Thousands have died in car accidents as a result. The idea was that with vehicles that get better mileage per gallon, the use of gasoline would decrease. However, consumers began to drive farther and more often, since their cars got such good mileage, and in the long run, the overall usage of oil went up. So not only did their experiment not decrease the usage of oil, but it killed thousands of Americans, as well.

This is a common happening with the environmentalists. They do one thing expecting a particular result, and in the long run, more often than not, their plan backfires.
