H1N1: Obama's Katrina

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The separation of powers devised during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 was proposed for the specific reason of saving the republic from autocracy. Power divided and distributed down so many different directions is unable to produce a government that becomes too big to protect liberty. But if Congress, and the States, do not perform their duties in our Constitutional Republic, the executive branch is encouraged to take more power for itself in order to achieve what it believes to be the best avenue for this nation. Though conceived with the original intentions (or at least sold as such) of being in the best interest of the nation, such power creates corruption, and ultimately a tyrannical government that no longer governs the people, but rules over the people with unchallenged authority, emerges.

Once the quest for increased power begins, like the proverbial snowball, the growth of government will not stop until it is stopped by a strong enough barrier, or rolls downhill with a size so large that the crash at the bottom succeeds in completely destroying the boulder of snow, and everything around it.

If a society is to remain cohesive and civilized, the answer is to place limitations on the power of governors over the governed. However, once given power, the desire for stronger, centralized power increases with each administration, and the desire to govern becomes a lust to rule. Then, through executive orders during national emergencies, the crisis allows those seeking power to increase their grip over the people, eventually gaining complete, totalitarian power without the populace ever realizing it happened.

The H1N1 Flu may be the crisis the leftists have been waiting for. Though a milder flu than our usual annual flu, the fear of death by virus is such that the hysteria has been staged by the progressives brilliantly. Following the propaganda of Katrina where the Left accused the federal government of not acting fast enough, Obama's administration plans to move quickly on H1N1, and when the crisis is averted, take the credit for quick federal action, thus proving to the people the need for a strong, central government. During the bulk of the crisis, however, the opportunity to rule the country by usurping legislative power will be available to the president.

I am not suggesting that the flu, be it H1N1, or your run-of-the-mill annual virus, should be taken lightly. Every year thousands die from the flu without the benefit of the H1N1 virus complicating things. Therefore, proper precautions should be taken. But by declaring the H1N1 epidemic a national emergency, the federal government has granted themselves authorities not available to them in non-emergency situations. The opportunity to trample on the freedoms of Americans becomes available to the federal government.

Interestingly, the Left was afraid of Bush doing the very thing the Obama Administration is doing now. Regardless of whether or not prior presidents did the same to one degree or another, this is the first time that a radical has taken possession of such an opportunity to take complete control over the freedoms of the people. The question now is if the leftists will overstep, or test the waters and back off when the American People recoil from the tyranny.

Ultimately, it is up to conservatives to keep applying the pressure, remain involved, and to continue to expose these fascists so that more and more people recognize their radical agenda, and join the revolution to stop it.

One wonders, however, if this is to be Obama's Katrina, if they will be as bold as to begin to confiscate weapons as happened in New Orleans after the hurricane hit - because an armed populace is a free society. The government needs to fear the people, and currently the people fear the government.

I am only suggesting that we stand on our feet for liberty, rather than be ruled over while on our knees.
