Major Earthquake Strikes Along California and Mexican Border

By Douglas V. Gibbs

At 3:45 pm Pacific Time a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Mexicali. The Los Angeles Fire Department went on immediate earthquake status. Some elevators in Los Angeles were stuck as a result of the rumbling, and L.A. area buildings and bridges are currently being inspected. Major aftershocks are expected.

Originally thought to be a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, the shaker was felt by over 20 million people in Southern California and Northern Mexico. I was at my brother's house for an Easter gathering in Corona, California when the quake struck, and the earthquake caught our attention, and became the topic of conversation once it passed.

In Mexicali there have been reports of people trapped in elevators, collapsed retaining walls, downed telephone lines, items falling off of shelves and bookcases, and power outages.

In San Diego there is no reports of injuries at this time, but there have been reports of shattered glass and items falling off of shelves.

Mexicali is situated right on the border of California and Mexico, at Imperial County east of San Diego.
