Eight people have died, and twelve others were injured, when shortly after the start of the California 200, a 200-mile race in the Mohave Desert, a truck in the race lost control, sailed through the air, and landed upside down in a crowd of people.
People were within 10 feet of the track, with no guard rails to protect them, so we can expect new safety measures to be implemented in future races.
The driver of the truck was uninjured, and ran from the scene as the unruly crowd began throwing rocks at him.
The cause of his loss of control is unknown.
