Muslim Militants Storm Chechnya's Parliament
By Douglas V. Gibbs
Muslim Militants stormed parliament in Chechnya, a war-torn Russian province. The Islamists gunned down guards, and held the political officials hostage, before some were killed in a bloody standoff with security forces, and the remaining militants killed themselves by detonating suicide explosives. The intense operation lasted 20 minutes, and 17 people were injured during the standoff.
Russia has been battling Muslim separatists in the Northern Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In Chechnya a war was waged against Muslim rebels from 1994-1996. A second war broke out in Chechnya in 1999, and it was then that it became clear that these conflicts were not with your typical insurgencies. The message was loud and clear: the rebellion’s inspiration was Islam, with the goal of imposing an Islamic state, complete with Sharia Law, in the region.
The media is being careful regarding stating the Muslim affiliation of these "separatists." American media has barely even whispered about this story. However, had the terrorists been something other than Muslim, it would probably have made front page news. Failure to condemn such behavior, in the eyes of Islam, condones it.
