After 66 days trapped in a mine underground, 33 trapped Chilean miners have been rescued. The drilling to reach the miners extended more than 2,000 feet underground, creating a shaft just wide enough for a specially designed escape capsule to pass through. The friends and families of the miners erupted into cheers and tears as bells rang to signal the tunnel had been completed.
The ordeal began when the mine collapsed on August 5. The evacuation of the trapped miners should begin shortly. A tentative date has been set for Tuesday to begin bringing the trapped miners to the surface. Part of the delay is due to the fact that rescuers are debating over the process of how to bring the men out. Rescuers are trying to determine whether to pull the miners through reinforced rock, or insert tons of heavy steel pipe into the shaft to protect the men on their way up.
