The rains began late last week, and are expected to continue well into the mid-part of this coming week. The heavy rain in Southern California is threatening flash flooding and debris flows in the burn areas that were ravaged last summer by a number of wild fires. The storm is also causing widespread urban flooding.
As a result of all of the rain, the National Weather Service has issued new warnings of potential mudslides and flooding. A flood watch has been issued for the burn areas.
After surviving the weekend storm, a series of new storms are forecast to continue through Tuesday, possibly Wednesday.
After experiencing drought conditions, the Southern California region can definitely use the rain, but not only will this only be a dent in the amount of rain needed, but too much rain all at once, combined with the bare hillsides from firestorms during the summer, creates hazardous conditions that may include neighborhood endangering mudslides and debris flows.
Up to eight inches of rain was provided by the latest storm system over the weekend, and another dump of up to ten inches is expected in the next couple days. The next onslaught of rain this week may be the largest storm in ten years, and it is expected to create more flooding concerns, particularly in the burn areas.
