Arizona Shooting Encourages Surge in Gun Sales

By Douglas V. Gibbs

For fear that the liberal controlled government will push for gun control measures as a result of the assassination attempt of Congresswoman Garbrielle Giffords, gun sales have skyrocketed. Gun shops are reporting a stampede of new customers.

Among the best sellers is the Glock 19, the model used in the Tucson shooting.

One-day sales of handguns in Arizona jumped 60 percent January 10 compared to the corresponding Monday a year ago. Gun sales has risen throughout the nation, as well. Handgun sales rose 65 percent to 395 in Ohio; 16 percent to 672 in California; 38 percent to 348 in Illinois; and 33 percent to 206 in New York, the FBI data show. Sales increased nationally about 5 percent, to 7,906 guns.

This is not the first time fear of a firearms ban has encouraged a jump in gun sales. An increase in firearms sales also occurred following the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech.

Gun control laws, however, would not deter the criminal element. Such legislation would only take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.

Gun control advocates have also keyed in on the extended magazine Loughner used in the shooting. The clip, banned in some states, reportedly enabled Loughner to fire 33 rounds without reloading.

Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy of New York is preparing to propose legislation that would ban the high-capacity magazine.
