Tuesday morning Gardena High School was the site of a shooting. Two young people were struck, one through the neck, another took a bullet to the temple. The suspect brought a loaded gun to school, and had it in his backpack. When he set the pack down (possibly when he reached in) the gun went off and a single bullet struck two of his classmates. Witnesses said that the student had been carrying the gun to school for a while, feeling like he needed it for protection. The school's security is lax, and a metal detector wand is only used to check one out of every five students.
Bringing a gun to school, especially a loaded gun (probably cocked and with the safety off), was a stupid decision by the young man. Now, he will be facing some serious charges. He made a bad individual decision, and it is a shame.
Gardena High School was the scene of another shooting in 2002.
During a radio show discussing the tragedy, a caller actually asked the local host if he thought the shooting was politically motivated.
All I could do was shake my head.
