Hezbollah, Iran's terrorist ally in Lebanon, is forcing the collapse of the Lebanese government. They did this by creating a significant presence in the nation, assuming positions in the government, and then withdrawing from their government posts. By withdrawing from Lebanon's cabinet, the national unity of the government is toppling.
The resignations will bring an investigation where members of Hezbollah will be investigated regarding the assassination of the prime minister. Syria's continued backing of Hezbollah, and its interference in Lebanon, has further eroded the already fragile situation in the small country.
Hezbollah has been working on having the Lebanese tribunal investigating the assassination of the former prime minister discredited. To fail would be embarrassing for Hezbollah, and Syria.
This withdrawal by Hezbollah’s ministers and their allies has created the worst crisis in Lebanon since 2008, when sectarian clashes brought Lebanon to the brink of a renewal of its 15-year civil war, which ended in 1990.
The government’s collapse will surely send a wave of uneasy unrest through the country. A leading opposition newspaper, Al Akhbar, underlined the sense of unease with an editorial headlined “The Beginning of the Unknown.” The fear is that the situation could turn bloody, with street clashes resulting in a victorious Hezbollah.
Lebanon is a good example of what happens when Islam sets its sights on a country. First, they work to create a significant influence, then slowly take control. Prior to the civil war, Lebanon was once a peaceful nation dominated by Christians. Now, Islam has gained significant influence, and turmoil seems to be a regular occurrence.
Time will tell if bloodshed hits the streets after the collapse of the government.
Hezbollah, I believe, is banking on it.
