New Gun-Control Proposal by Peter King A Bad Idea

By Douglas V. Gibbs

We knew it would happen. A shooter pulls the trigger, and the entire population becomes suspect. A gun used in an attempt to murder a Congressman would be treated as a situation caused by the gun, rather than the individual.

One never expected that the resulting proposal would be dreamed up by a Republican.

Representative Peter King is the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and he has come up with the idea of a new bill that would restrict anyone from carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a federal official.

Would such a piece of legislation have stopped Loughner from doing what he did? King thinks so. But reality dictates otherwise.

Nutbags like Loughner don't care what the law is. They get their guns anyway, and then work to do whatever it is they do. All a law like this would do is eliminate any more guns that may have been in play to stop him.

This bill is just another attempt to whittle away at our right to keep and bear arms. It is dangerous, and the members of the GOP standing against King are in the right. It would be in their best interest to stop this unconstitutional proposal.
