Barry Bonds Trial Starts Today

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Barry Bonds' perjury trial begins today. He claimed he never knowingly took performance enhancing substances, but the alleged lie may have been exposed.

From a thin player in Pittsburgh, to a muscle bound specimen, Bonds' career changed greatly, and it was believed to be Steroids behind it. After going from a quick base stealer, to a heavy pounding home run hitter, it wasn't surprising when in 2003, records seized from BALCO, pointed at Bonds as having taken the performance enhancement drugs. During the Grand Jury, however, Barry Bonds claimed he did not know at the time that he was taking performance enhancing drugs.

Bonds has been charged with perjury and contempt of court, and after jail and media confrontation, Bonds' life has been turned upside down.

A trial of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, also charged with lying under oath about his involvement with steroids, is on the horizon as well. Testimony in Bonds' trial is expected from his fellow players in San Francisco, including Jason Giambi and Benito Santiago. Barry Bonds' ex-girlfriend, Kimberly Bell, is also expected to take the stand, to talk about his sexual dysfunction and fits of rage, which are believed to be linked to steroid use.

Bonds' trial is going to be held in the same courthouse that he was in during his grand jury in December 2003, where he claimed he never knowingly took performance enhancing substances.

Lying under oath, and cheating by taking these performance enhancing drugs, may keep Bonds out of the Hall of Fame. In that case, despite the fact that many consider Bonds to be the greatest hitter in baseball history, a conviction could very well convince the Hall of Fame voters to deny him entry.

Roger Clemens may face the same fate.
