A few years ago I read that in San Diego one in three illegal aliens crossing the border are of Middle Eastern descent. The concern was that along with those invaders came weapons designed to inflict maximum damage. The Jihad, it seemed, was crossing the border freely, well equipped with instruments of death.
Now, U.S. customs officers in San Diego are indicating that government personnel have intercepted what could be termed as a weapon of mass effect.
In fact, such weapons, including chemical weapons and radiological dirty bombs, are not a rare occurrence, and actually regularly cross the U.S. border, though not necessarily through ports of entry.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has concluded that terrorists could use counterfeit identification to pass through most of the tested ports of entry with little chance of being detected. This has encouraged the GAO to shift their focus from ports of entry to primarily performed limited security assessments of unmanned and unmonitored areas between ports of entry.
Last month, U.S. Border Patrol agents captured a radical Muslim cleric attempting to sneak into the United States across the California-Mexican border near the location of the suspected WMD interception. The cleric was identified as an individual with a history of supporting terrorism, and who had been banned from France and Canada, as well as the United States.
