Founding Fathers, Government Shutdown

"The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale." --Thomas Jefferson

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The Founding Fathers, upon looking at the government spending under the Obama administration, and the size of our national debt, would be horrified. Now, like in 1995, a government shutdown looms, and the Democrats are crying the same old tunes.

The media, and the Democrats, are running around freaking out over the possible government shutdown, and are of course prepared to blame the GOP as they did in 1995. We'll hear stories of starving children, dying seniors, an possible violence in the streets.

Last year, with a majority in both houses of Congress, and a Democrat in the White House, the Democrats never came up with a budget. Yet, they blame the Republicans for the mess. Why didn't they pass a budget back then? Could it have been that it was an election year, and they didn't wish to reveal their economic plans too quickly, knowing that the people would reject it?

So while the Democrats claim a shutdown is coming because the Republicans won't compromise, could it not be possible that a shutdown is coming because the Democrats refuse to be fiscally responsible?

Besides, the government already shuts down a few times a year. It's called "holidays." Does everything fall apart during those time periods?

So while Chuck Schumer is running around telling Boehner to get control of the Tea Party, because they can't have everything their way, the Democrats are doing whatever they can to avoid a government shutdown.

Why? Why are the Democrats so afraid of a government shutdown? Do they realize that nobody will notice, and they will be blamed for being fiscally irresponsible? It's all about power for those people, and their power is derived from handing things out.

The thing is, the spending is unsustainable. Either we cut some now, or lose it all later as we are forced into austerity measures.

In the days long before progressivism took a complete hold of this nation, the most the average person dealt with the federal government is when his mail was delivered. The federal government is not supposed to be in our lives, it is not the save-all the Democrats treat it as, and we would actually be better off while the government is shut down. Bring it on, and let it last a while.

While the government is shut down, the damage they can cause will be minimalized.

I say, stick to your guns, Tea Party Republicans. Make them accept Paul Ryan's budget, or let it all shut down until they do!
