Camp Pendleton is a huge Marine Corps base on the other side of the hills from where I live. I can get to the back gate in less than twenty minutes. I have spent a lot of time on that base, both from my Navy days, and my construction days, and one thing I know about that base is they don't mess around when it comes to base security.
Last weekend, however, three Middle Eastern men tried to enter without proper authorization, anyway. The group of men consisted of a 40 year old Afghani, and 41 year old Iranian, and a 27 year old Iranian. They tried to enter the base by using a method that had one of the men being stopped and searched at the main entrance, and then the other two men in a separate vehicle drove right by in the hopes that security would be too busy with the lone man in the first car to take chase. However, following a short pursuit, the second car with the two men in it was stopped and searched as well.
No fire arms or other devices that may be consistent with terrorism was found, and the background checks brought up no terrorist history, so the military decided to stop the investigation and let the guys go.
Was this a dry-run? Or was something else amiss?
One thing is for sure; base security is now even tighter.
As an added consideration, the San Onofre nuclear power plant is across the freeway from the northern section of the base.
