Rand Paul is one of those Tea Party Freshmen. The son of Ron Paul differs from his father in many ways. Rand Paul sees promise in the Republican Party, even when many conservatives see the party as a lost cause, and on its way out along with the Whigs.
At a recent Conservative Principles Convention in Iowa, Rand Paul shined, revealing his truly conservative principles, rather than anything similar to his father's libertarian views. As a Tea Party statesman, Rand Paul's government-shrinking, deficit-cutting message energized those in attendance.
In Rand Paul's keynote speech, he recognized that today's voter is more informed than four years ago. He also recognized that the Republican Party is not exactly held in high esteem with many members of the Tea Party, or the more libertarian voters. But, as a Republican, he also reminded us that members of the GOP should never compromise on their core beliefs. That is what has been happening, and Rand Paul compared such compromising to slavery.
The current economic policies are unsustainable, and as a result, the nation faces a "day of fiscal reckoning" with its deficit, and the prospect of inflation.
"It's not enough just to be a Republican," Paul told the crowd. "It's not enough just for the Republican party to exist. Political parties are empty vessels unless we imbue them with values. We have to stand for something, and we have to mean it."
In other words, the party can change once we realize we have control over changing it.
Politicians need to realize that without the voters, there would be no "them."
