Storms across Georgia leave 86,000 customers without power, including 71,000 in the Atlanta area

The strong storms expected to bring damaging winds, large hail and lightning to the metro area hit northwest Georgia first Monday night.

Trees and power lines were down in Floyd County and baseball-sized hail was falling in Gordon County.

Lightning is believed to have caused five house fires in the Rome area. Firefighters and police officers were also dealing with debris on roadways in Gilmer County, where people were reportedly trapped in homes.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until midnight for most of the metro area and north Georgia.
