Reports have emerged that the terror mastermind al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden is dead. The reports indicate that familial DNA was used to identify the body, which was allegedly killed in Pakistan when the mansion he was living in near Islamabad was struck by a U.S. missile attack on the location, though some reports have indicated he was shot. The death of Bin Laden is reported to have happened a week ago, and White House officials are expected to provide details tonight. The body is said to be in U.S. possession.
The speculation of Osama Bin Laden's death raises a lot of questions. What will this do in regards to the war on terror? Will those that hold Bin Laden in high esteem retaliate? What does this do to our presence in Afghanistan? How does this change the operation in Libya? How did Osama Bin Laden survive all of these years? Did he spend time in Iran?
Interestingly, this news has been released on the same day that the Taliban has launched their Spring offensive. Reports of extra preparations being taken around the world in the case of retaliation is also being reported.
As the truth is revealed, perhaps some of these questions will be answered.
UPDATE: President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden is in fact dead. . . and was careful to ensure everyone understood that it happened under his direction. Obama also made sure to say that we are not war with Islam, that bin Laden is not a Muslim leader. . . just a mass murderer that happened to be a Muslim. This is not to say that Obama was completely idiotic. He did say that we will not tolerate attacks against us, and that the war will continue because al-Qaeda's operations will continue. He then made a commitment to those that lost loved ones on 9/11 - we will not stop in our endeavor to keep terror from returning to our shores. "Let us remember we can do these things, not because of wealth and power, but because we are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Honestly, I found that last part a shock. Good speech writer? Recognition that he would be under fire if he didn't say something of that sort? Or did that really come from Obama's heart? For some reason, the word "taqiyya" comes to mind.
