Five people died when a stage collapsed during a powerful storm at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis on Saturday. The fans killed were among a group of fans awaiting a performance by the country band Sugarland. Steel scaffolding fell on the crowd below moments after an announcer warned of the advancing storm and gave instructions on what to do in event of an evacuation. About 40 people were injured, and many were treated at a triage center in a tunnel below the grandstand at the Indianapolis fairgrounds. Later, it was reported that at least 18 people were brought in to Wishard Memorial Hospital.
Injuries ranged from cuts, scrapes, broken bones, and more serious injuries. It is being reported that it may also be likely the death toll will also climb.
As a result, fair officials canceled all activities Sunday, but is expected to resume Monday with a service honoring the victims.
The severe storm was being monitored before the tragedy, and preparations were being made to evacuate the facility. However, the significant gust of wind that struck the stage rigging that holds lights and other equipment before the evacuation plan was activated was sudden, and unexpected.
Some of the injured were in a VIP section in front of the stage known as the "Sugar Pit." The witnesses said the dirt, dust, rain and wind came up the main thoroughfare of the fairgrounds just before the collapse. Many reported a sudden appearance of dark clouds, and lightning, but no rain, prior to the gust of wind.
