Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach charged with child sex abuse, has decided to waive his preliminary hearing. The decision to waive the hearings moves him closer toward a trial and vacates the possibility that he would face his accusers in court on Tuesday.
During preliminary hearings, prosecutors are tasked with showing that they have enough probable cause to bring the case to trial. This case has already been through a grand jury, so the prosecutor's job was deemed as being a fairly easy task.
The hearing was expected to last a day or more, but a minute into court proceedings this morning, Sandusky waived the hearings. Sandusky has continuously denied the allegations against him. The scandal ultimately led to the resignations of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and the university president.
