The Senate OK’d a bill that would allow students to deliver “inspirational messages” at public school assemblies.
Sen. Gary Siplin believes this is the year for school prayer.
Sure, Florida lawmakers have pitched the idea time and time again. But Siplin, a Democrat from Orlando, says his bill has momen- tum.
His proof? On Wednesday, the bill became among the first of the year to win approval from the Senate. It passed by a vote of 31-8.
“People are coming together behind the idea this year,” Siplin said. “With the economy the way it is, everyone could use a little inspirational message.”
Still, the vote Wednesday wasn’t without controversy – and serious debate.

Note later in the story that the faculty, according to the bill, would not be able to participate, but would also not be able to interfere. The assemblies using prayer would be optional in regards to student attendance.
