Issue by issue, the liberal left cannot win in the arena of ideas. The Left is losing ground on issues like abortion, so they have had to shift their strategy when it comes to the women vote. They are fairly certain they can beat Romney in the general election, for all they would have to do is launch personal attacks against his wealth and position. All they have to do is clump Romney with the fat-cat rich that isn't allegedly paying their fair share, and that combined with the loss of the conservative vote because Romney is a moderate, would equal victory for Obama. The liberal left also believes they have Newt Gingrich beat pretty easily. All they have to do is drum up lies about how everybody hated Newt so much when he left the Speakership, launch attacks on his few unpredictable statements, drag out the Fannie and Freddie accusations they have already run through the mud, and they figure they have Newt beat too. All it takes is accusations, without a whole lot of evidence, and a few additional nasty attacks, combined with the votes the democrats have bought with entitlements, and they figure the road to White House reelection is easy enough. They even think they have a chance to take back the House.
The liberal Democrats did not take into consideration any of the conservatives. They especially did not expect Rick Santorum to have any real chance at winning the nomination. However, Santorum has stuck around, and has done quite well lately. With Santorum refusing to disappear, the democrats have had to prepare for their campaign of personal destruction against him as well. The problem is, Santorum is conservative at his core. He is a good family man. His trip away from the campaign trail to spend time with his sick daughter even impressed Dave Mustaine, frontman for the heavy metal band, Megadeth.
With a conservative core, and a genuine love for this country, the liberal left democrats have little to attack Santorum with, so they will have to take nuggets of truth and fabricate a whole negative attack around it.
And that is exactly what they are doing.
The ideological attack regarding contraceptives is not Obama's way of attacking religion, even though he is. It was devised to be a attack against Santorum, and the conservative momentum in this primary season.
Let's back up, though, for a moment. I want to make sure we understand the mindset here. Remember, for liberal democrats, everything is about government. If they believe something should happen, or if something ought to be eliminated, they believe it is the role of government to do it. They shroud their actions with claims of good intentions to make the big government actions more palatable, but don't be deceived, the basic principle of making a better community (or at least better in their warped opinion) can be achieved by any means, even if that way about doing it means forcing people to follow liberalism's mandates.
Because the liberals think change falls under the realm of government duties, they figure the opposition thinks the same way. . . or at least they will spin it that way.
Okay, now back to Santorum, and birth control.
Understanding that they really don't have any dirt on Santorum, they have to create it. That said, they think they have the golden goose in birth control. After all, Santorum is a Catholic, and has said in past interviews that he believes birth control is a bad thing. Based on the premise that change happens through government, that means they can hammer Santorum as being someone willing to use government to take contraceptives away from everyone. Surely, the women vote would not be willing to gamble on a guy that may be willing to take away from them their precious ability to make no babies.
Conservatives believe in the concept of limited government, and the principles of the U.S. Constitution, which means that no matter how opposed to birth control Santorum may be he will not use the federal government to mandate the elimination of birth control measures.
Besides, despite Obama's promises, there is no such thing as free birth control. There is always a payment, and in this case the payment is more than tax dollars. The payment would be in liberty as well.
The attacks against Santorum are regarding his view that birth control promotes immoral behavior. Without having to worry about the pregnancy, those that use birth control outside of marriage see it as a way to enable them to be more promiscuous. That is a reasonable assumption. But it is something we must deal with at the societal level, not through government. It is not the government's role to force letting go of birth control, or in the case of Obama's mandate, it is also not the government's role to force employers or insurance companies to pay for birth control.
The truth doesn't matter to the Left, however. This is about setting up Santorum, just in case he pulls off the nomination.
