Unstable Service Member Opens Fire on Civilians in Afghanistan

By Douglas V. Gibbs

An Army staff sergeant, acting alone, left his base in southern Afghanistan and opened fire on sleeping families in two villages. Initial reports indicated he returned to the base after the shooting and turned himself in.  The number of dead is currently at 16. The shooter has been in the military for 11 years, has served three tours in Iraq and is married with two children. He is currently being held held in pretrial confinement in Kandahar while Army officials review his complete deployment and medical history.

Could it be fatique that affected this soldier? Or was he psychotic in the first place?

This episode will undoubtedly encourage the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.
