The American Flag is a symbol, a reminder of the liberty we enjoy. We salute it, and pledge to all "for which it stands." Once a year, the flag even has its own day.
Yesterday was Flag Day.
First celebrated in 1877, on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777, the flag's birthday is publically observed on June 14.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made it nationally official with a proclamation, but the designation as National Flag Day occurred August 3rd, 1949 by an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
Old Glory's day is celebrated with parades, ceremonies, schools, by veteran groups, and at each house that flies her colors. In this way, we play a little part in preserving the traditions, history, pride, and respect that are due the nation's symbol.
