China and Russia Vetoes Sanctions Against Syria

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The chaos in Syria has become an all-out civil war, and Obama, Britain, France (included in eleven of fifteen nations) have called for sanctions against Syria's President Bashar al-Assad. As expected, Russia and China vetoed the U.N. Security Council resolution for the third time.

Though it is typical of Russia and China to side with a dictator, one wonders if we shouldn't just let what happens in Syria run its course. In other words, is it any of our business? What about the attitude of the Founding Fathers regarding the United States' involvement in foreign entanglements? In other words, does the situation in Syria directly affect the United States at this point?

I get it, Assad's regime is brutal and innocent people are being slaughtered. It is discouraging to see Russia and China supporting, and protecting, such a mad-man... but is it our business? Perhaps we should observe until American interests, or the safety of any of our allies (like Israel), are at risk.

On the other hand, Syria is becoming a focal point, a spark that may ignite the entire Middle East. Would it be in our best interest to take steps to extinguish that flame before the entire region goes up in a fiery blaze?

Close monitoring is definitely warranted.
