Romney Speaks to the NAACP

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Watching and reading the main-extreme media report on Romney's speech to the NAACP, it was fascinating how they focused on the moments that Romney was booed, but never said anything about the standing ovation he received at the end.

Romney did a fine job, and you have to give him credit for showing up to speak at an event that was likely to not be a friendly crowd. Interestingly enough, Romney guts rose way above Obama's. Barry wasn't even willing to show up to speak to the NAACP - he sent Biden instead. I think Obama takes the black vote for granted.

Or maybe, it is because Obama knows he has devastated the black community with his policies, and he can't face them.

Romney refused to separate blacks as a group like Obama does, and instead revealed that he sees everyone as Americans - claiming that his campaign is about Americans, and more specifically helping the embattled middle class:

"I believe that if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real enduring best interests of American African-American families, you would vote for me for president. Now, of course you know the opposition charges that I and people in my party are running for office to help the rich. Nonsense. The rich will do just fine, whether I'm elected or not. The president wants to make this campaign about blaming the rich, and I want to make this a campaign about helping the middle class in America."

Notice that he emphasized the economy. Is the way to go still "it's about the economy, stupid?"

Romney also said, "As you may have heard from my opponent, I'm also a believer in the free enterprise system. I believe it can bring change where so many well meaning government programs have failed. I've never heard anyone look around an impoverished neighborhood and say, 'You know, there's just too much free enterprise around here. Too many shops. Too many jobs. Too many people putting money in the bank.' What you hear, of course, is, 'How do we bring in jobs? How do we make good, honest employers want to move in?' Free enterprise. Free enterprise is still the greatest force for upward mobility, economic security, and the expansion of the middle class."

Notice, he is pointing out Obama's anti-capitalist tendencies.

Romney may have even won a vote or two. . .

Maybe.

The problem is liberalism reigns supreme at the NAACP. Profit is the enemy. Success is the enemy. An honest dollar is the enemy.

Boos for criticizing Obama's policies, boos for saying he would repeal Obamacare.

That's why Obama has taken them for granted. They kicked Martin Luther King Jr. in the shins by refusing to consider Obama based on his strength of character, and instead opted to vote for him based on his color. Polls have shown that many of the black voters who voted for Obama voted for him because he's black.

Romney offers them escape from slavery by being willing to reform entitlements, cut spending, get rid of nonessential programs, and get rid of Obamacare which is poised to allow the government to control our every action . . . and for that they booed him.

Then Romney said it like it is to them: "My agenda is not to put in place a series of policies that get me a lot of attention and applause. My policy will be, number one: Create jobs for the American people. I do not have a hidden agenda. And I submit to you this. If you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him."

Nailed it.
