Series of Earthquakes and Major Aftershocks Slam Northwestern Iran

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Iran is susceptible to earthquakes, and have been hit with fairly strong ones all month. Yesterday, however, they were hit by a series of earthquakes greater than 6.0, and then a series of aftershocks hovering around 5.0 magnitude. As a result, over 300 people have died, and thousands are injured.

With homes destroyed, many families have resorted to sleeping outside. The cold weather in the mountainous region have made it difficult on the people whose homes were damaged or destroyed to survive, and for rescue crews to move the injured to emergency facilities.

The intensity of the quakes may have also widened the disaster into the East Azerbaijan province.

Of the 60 villages sustaining damage of more than 50%, six of those villages were completely leveled.
