In 2008 we were told that a man, Barack Obama, could unite America. We have been told that the republicans would have a chance in these elections if the right man would just unite the party. We have been told that if conservatives would just let go of issues that the Left says makes people mad, we would have a chance in uniting America and evolving into the nation the liberal left envisions. The GOP is the party of "No," and the conservatives are clinging to outdated principles, and an outdated Constitution - or so we are told.
We are being told wrong.
People are individuals. We are unique, with our own concerns, and our own pet issues. Even TEA Party folks, all in a room together, have many different opinions over the same issue. That is the nature of being human, and there is nothing wrong with that.
The one thing we have in common, the thing that has always united Americans, are the principles contained on the pages of the United States Constitution. Freedom. Liberty. Self-government. A limited central government. State Sovereignty. Opportunity. Prosperity. Self-reliance. Choice. These are the things that most Americans believe in. Many don't even realize it. That is where education comes in. That is where teaching the Constitution comes in, from classes to organizations to speeches to constitutional writings.
The Constitution is what unites us - therefore, I hold up the Constitution as the central driving force of all that I do. If we learn the Constitution, and return to constitutional principles - a.k.a. the rule of law - the other issues, the arguments, the things that divide us, will be resolved.
The Constitution Unites America. . . if we would just give it a chance.
