"We are here to show that an armed society is a polite society," said one of the gun-toting participants at a pro-gun rally in San Antonio, Texas designed to protest recent harassment against gun owners by local authorities. Texas law allows the open carry of long guns, but not handguns. In a few recent instances the San Antonio police have made arrests of people carrying long guns, citing a more restrictive city ordinance banning weapons in public places. According to the keynote speaker at the event, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who is also the Republican candidate for the lieutenant governor and an avid gun-rights advocate, "The rally was about the right of Texans to openly carry their pistols."
The rally was aptly named, "Come and Take It San Antonio."
During the event police left the protesters alone. However, after the event was over a number of protesters were warned by police that they could be cited if they did not leave the grounds.
There were no incidents involving firearms. The media was shocked. During my reading about the event, the journalism (if you want to call it that) came across as if the media did not understand how no guns were going off. It didn't compute. Guns are bad, they think. Guns cause gun violence, they believe. And when corralled together like that, wouldn't the guns get spooked and just start going off randomly?
Earlier this year at a local city council meeting the topic on the floor was if the ordinance in Murrieta should be amended to allow for indoor gun ranges in the city. The support for the idea was overwhelming. A lone liberal leftist spoke out against the suggested ordinance change.
When the woman was at the dais to speak out against the consideration of putting an indoor gun range in the city, she said that allowing such a facility in the city would bring more guns to the city, and guns equal crime. She was convinced that all gun owners, whether they be illegal gun owners, or law-abiding gun owners, were criminals, and capable of shooting anyone at anytime. And having a shooting range, she told us, would just attract even more crime as more gun owners flocked to the area.
After she stepped down, my turn came up, and I promptly shot down her argument, explaining that her theory was wrong. In fact, whenever local gun ownership in an area is up, crime is down. The criminal element prefers their victims unarmed. Criminals do not like to be shot at. Armed citizens are the best deterrent against crime.
She shook her head in disagreement the whole time I was talking.
The Left is stunned. All of these armed gun owners congregating at the Alamo should have turned into a shoot-out.
Yet, all of the mass shootings keep happening in liberal controlled gun-free zones.
Quite a quandary for our liberal friends.
But it isn't really about guns with them. It is really about control.
