Islamic Terrorist Bombing in Russia Cautions Olympic Security

By Douglas V. Gibbs

On Sunday, as the Winter Olympic Games approach, an explosion blasted through a railway station in Volgograd, immediately killing 16 people.  Another has died from her injuries, since, bringing the death toll to 17.  Some reports have the death toll as high as 30, when one adds another bombing on a trolleybus in Volgograd.  The attacker at the railway station was a Muslim woman, a suicide bomber.  In Russia, female suicide bombers have become more common in recent years, earning them the nickname, "Black Widows."  As investigators sift through the twisted metal of the trolleybus, they are coming to the conclusion that the twin attacks are linked.

Experts suggest the terrorist attack was by a woman of Chechen origin, in an attempt to bring awareness of issues regarding Muslim regions in Russia's Caucuses.  These attacks have been happening in the same area for some time, as well as in Moscow at one of the major airports.

The attack on Volgograd's railway station comes only six weeks before the Winter Olympic Games commence in nearby Sochi, encouraging Olympic Security to pay special attention.  The suicide bombing coincides with a call for attacks several months ago by Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov.  He called for attacks against civilian targets in Russia, including the Sochi Games. Umarov, the self-proclaimed emir of a terrorist group that calls itself the Caucasus Emirate, has called on Muslims to prevent the Olympics from occurring.

Islam claims the Olympic Games is a provocation, occurring on lands conquered from the Muslims (after they conquered them in the first place). Volgograd was not a typical target, but the city formerly known as Stalingrad has been struck twice in two months — suggesting militants may be using the transportation hub as a renewed way of showing their reach outside their restive region.
