New York City Train Derailment Kills 4, After New Mexico Train Accident Kills 3

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Early reports state that at least four people have lost their lives after a passenger train derailed during its trek towards New York City.  Reports also indicated that there are "dozens of injuries" from the accident.  The train, comprising of seven cars, sent five of them off the tracks, leaving two of them on their sides.  None of the cars fell into the waterway, though one finished its slide mere feet from the water's edge.  130 firefighters are on the scene.

The cause of the derailment remains unknown.

The accident in New York City this morning follows a derailment in New Mexico where three train operators were killed when their freight train derailed. The train, after losing grip on the tracks, plunged down a revine.  The locomotive was pulling eight cars, and after it went off the tracks and tumbled down a 40 to 50 foot ravine, the cars derailed moments later.

As in New York City, the cause of the accident has not been determined.
