Post-apocalyptic tales often use the "worldwide epidemic" tool as an explanation for global catastrophe. The likelihood of a pandemic seems more likely to science fiction writers than nuclear war or meltdown, these days. Even television has caught on to the international virus idea. The truth may be closer to fiction than many realize:
