Bill Bissell asks a very salient question this morning: "Did anyone see the Ebola virus behead anyone, shoot anyone, crucify anyone? So why is Obama sending 3000 U.S. military personnel to West Africa to "combat" the virus?:
Obama is expected to announce Tuesday that he's sending up to 3,000 military personnel to combat the Ebola virus in West Africa.
Obama will announce the stepped-up offensive against the outbreak, which has killed more than 2,200 people in five West African countries, in an appearance at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Administration officials said that the U.S. would help to provide medical and logistical support to overwhelmed local health care systems and to boost the number of beds needed to isolate and treat victims of the epidemic. The Defense [Commissariat] has asked Congress for nearly $500 million in existing funds to be put toward the effort. The money would otherwise be used to support overseas contingency operations, such as the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan.
The new initiatives include training as many as 500 health care workers a week; erecting 17 heath care facilities with approximately 100 beds each; setting up a joint command headquartered in Monrovia, Liberia, to coordinate between U.S. and international relief efforts; providing home health care kits to hundreds of thousands of households, including 50,000 that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will deliver to Liberia this week; and carrying out a home- and community-based campaign to train local populations on how to handle exposed patients.
Mr. Bissell does well to ask the question. He doesn't do so well in providing a speculatory answer. Kenya isn't anywhere near West Africa. It's about as far from West Africa as you can get and still be on the African continent. And it's precisely such "birther-esque" speculation that makes the entire Tea Party movement look as foolish as the Left wants it to look.
Here's why Red Barry is launching this invasion of Ebola, in no particular order:
1) As a distraction from his ongoing ISIS debacle, before it can get even worse;
2) As a contrast with his ongoing ISIS debacle, to make himself look muscular and proactive and effective in appearing to actually be dealing with a legitimate threat to the United States;
3) Re-tasking the military from its intended role - "killing people and breaking things" so effectively that they don't have to kill too many people or break too many things - to being "the Peace Corps in khaki". Not unlike how the Border Patrol has been diverted from patrolling the border to baby-sitting and pediatric triage. And....
4) ....yeah, he actually does give a damn about non-American black lives. And by deploying three thousand largely white Americans into a lethal pandemic, there's a really good chance that at least some of them will contract the contagion and either die "heroically" from it or linger long enough to bring it back with them and get it started burning through the American civilian population.
Or, in other words, "social justice".
See, Bill? "Birtherism" is flatter than three-year-old Dr. Pepper. Moderate extrapolation is what really stirs the pot.
