As Putin threatens to deepen his invasion of Ukraine, the United States and European forces are sending a message to Russia by planning a joint military exercise in the near future with more than 1,000 troops from the United States and its allies in western Ukraine.

The annual exercise taking place at Ukraine's border with Poland, was initially scheduled for July, but was put back because early planning was disrupted by the Russian invasion in eastern Ukraine.
As the crisis mounts in eastern Ukraine, NATO has stepped up military activity in its eastern member states, beginning the increased activity shortly after Russia's annexation of Crimea in March.
The United States is also moving tanks and 600 troops to Poland and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for joint maneuvers in October.
