The United States Geological Service states that a 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia. The epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast, about 25 miles below the seabed. No tsunami warning has been issue.
No damage has been reported as being caused by the late evening earthquake. When the quake struck, people ran out of their homes more in fear of a massive tsunami, than form the rattling. In 2004, an earthquake near Sumatra caused a tsunami that killed 230,000 people.
This earthquake follows another 6.8 magnitude event further north along the Pacific Rim of Fire from a few days ago. That earthquake slammed central Japan, injuring 13 people (5 were injured seriously), and temporarily trapping 21 at Hakuba Village. The earthquake destroyed five houses in Hakuba village, host to some of the Winter Olympic events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games, but that the 21 villagers trapped were successfully rescued.
