Michael Sam: NFL Is Homophobic

by JASmius

Alternate headline: "The Rams and Cowboys can't cut me just because I wanted to put yardage in their backfields":

Michael Sam believes he’s not on a NFL roster because of the fact he’s openly gay — telling TMZ Sports he strongly believes he’s got the talent to play in the league.

Check.  I'm amazed it took him this long to play the "homophobia" card.

Sam was at LAX this morning when he was asked if he thinks NFL teams are shying away from him because of his sexual orientation … or if it has to do with the level of talent he faced after college. “I think I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year … so I don’t think it had to do with talent.”

He thinks he was SEC Defensive Player of the Year?  In point of fact, he was the co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year.  Does he not check his trophy case, at least semi-regularly?

But so what?  He's also been (so far) unable to cut it in the NFL.  Because he's homosexual?  I seriously doubt it.  The NFL is one of the most meritocratic organizations in human civilization.  And teams are always looking for pass rushers.  If you're a defensive end who can get to the quarterback on a regular basis, they will build you your own shower stall in which to get awkward boners.  Is Jadeveon Clowney "gay"?  Heck if I know.  But if he is, obviously the Houston Texans didn't care, because he's an NFL-caliber linebacker.  Something Michael Sam is not.

But let's say, for the sake of discussion, that Michael Sam has been blackballed for his blue balls.  Whose fault is that?  "Sam Iyam" made a deliberate point of using his retrograde sexuality as a publicity wedge to horn his way into the NFL.  I'm still trying to expunge from the inside of my eyelids the thirty-plus interminable minutes of ESPN's draft day coverage of the cake-jizzed tonsillectomy Sam and his boy-toy inflicted upon us all when the Rams selected him with the 249th pick.  It couldn't have been any more obvious that he wasn't confident he could make it to the NFL on his talent alone, and so set up his perversion as both a "get into the league free" card and a minted excuse if and when he failed.  The card of which he's now played.

You want to make it in the NFL, Mike?  Get bigger, stronger, and faster.  And stop smearing the league for your own failures.  You really aren't helping your cause by doing so.
