Southern California Refinery Explosion Rocks Neighborhoods

By Douglas V. Gibbs

Earthquakes are usually what rocks neighborhoods in Southern California, but on Wednesday morning neighborhoods around the City of Torrance were rocked by a massive explosion at
the Exxon Mobil refinery.  Residents in the area were asked by law enforcement to remain indoors, turn off all heating or air systems, and close their windows.

Officials state that air quality is not a danger, as ash was falling from the sky.  It is believed the explosion may have been the result of a petroleum product leak that prompted workers to activate the refinery's flare system.

More than a dozen schools in the area have kept children inside.  A lack of wind has kept any material in the air from the explosion from spreading rapidly to surrounding areas.

The refinery's flare system shoots flames into the sky and, according to Exxon Mobil.

Two minor injuries have been reported.  The explosion twisted metal at the site, and was felt as far as seven miles away.
