Short version: The coup that overthrew the pro-Russian puppet government of Ukraine over a year ago threatened, in Czar Vlad's eyes, Russia's ability to move its oil and gas supplies to its European customers, the bulk of which go right across Ukraine....
....and since oil and gas exports make up roughly half of Russia's GDP, and the Russian strongman instinctively assumed that the Obama Regime engineered this "hostile" (to Vlad) coup (as if....), he considered it an act of war by the United States against the Russian Federation.
But since Mr. Putin also apparently considers his military capabilities to not be up to a direct confrontation with the U.S. (which reveals how pathetic Russian intelligence capabilities have become), but also perhaps because of his KGB heritage, he has undertaken his invasion and conquest of Ukraine under the proverbial radar. Hence, the Russian-stuffed "popular plebiscite" in Crimea and the ghost army that is slowly rolling up the rest of Ukraine.
Not exactly The War On The Eastern Front. But this is the twenty-first century, y'know.
