Corona Wal-Mart Solar Carports Denied

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In all of their environmental efforts, sometimes seeking renewable energy has more obstacles than cloudy days or birds flying into windmills.

Following Murrieta’s Wal-Mart installation of solar carports, the Corona Wal-Mart decided to pursue the same. Wal-Mart seeks to attain 100% renewable energy nationwide. The Corona City Council denied the Corona location’s request to install solar carports that proposed more than 60% energy efficiency, bringing total energy production to 1 million kilowatt-hours annually, or about the power consumption of 92 American homes (I wonder if that takes into account the days of lost solar energy on cloudy days?). Critics in Corona cited that glare emitted from the panels would depreciate property values in the area and potentially harm their eyes as their reason for opposition. The Murrieta Wal-Mart removed over 100 trees to facilitate the installation of their solar carports.
