Ooops, sorry, wrong Mt. Obama....
That's better. Although I've got to think that Mt. Everest....
....and then Olympus Mons....
....will be next. At least with the latter two The One will be pissing off the Nepalese and ChiComms and the Martians for a change:
Barack Obama will change the name of North America's tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to [Obama], the White House said Sunday, bestowing [his own] name on the eve of a historic presidential visit to Alaska.
By renaming the peak [Obama], an Athabascan word meaning "the high one," Obama is [settling by force] a sensitive and decades-old conflict between residents of Alaska and Ohio. Alaskans have informally called the 20,320-foot mountain [Obama] for years, but the federal government recognizes its name invoking the twenty-fifth president, William McKinley, who was born in Ohio and assassinated early in his second term.
But he was white and a veteran and a Republican, so he obviously didn't deserve that esteemed honor.
"With our own sense of reverence for [our president], we are officially renaming the mountain [Obama] in recognition of the [new] traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska," said Interior [Commissar] Sally Jewell.
The announcement came as Obama prepared to depart early Monday on a three-day visit to Alaska, becoming the first sitting president to travel north of the Arctic Circle. As part of his visit, Obama is [receiving the idolatrous worship of] Alaska Natives, and planned to hold a round-table session with a group of Alaska Natives just after arriving Monday in Anchorage.
Okay, I was having a (more than a) little fun with the story. The Regime is unilaterally renaming Mt. McKinley Mt. "Denali," which means absolutely nothing to anybody outside Alaska and which everybody else in the country will continue to call Mt. McKinley. It's cheap, gratuitous, almost afterthought pandering to a (naturally) non-white minority, which obviously outweighed in O's mind the fact that it's making a friendly gesture to the people of a "red" State.
It is, however, royally torquing the people of a State that DID go for his infernal majesty - twice:
“There is a reason President McKinley’s name has served atop the highest peak in North America for more than a hundred years, and that is because it is a testament to his great legacy,” Speaker John Boehner (R-OH8) said in a statement issued Sunday night.
“I’m deeply disappointed in this decision,” Boehner said after noting that McKinley served in the Army during the Civil War before representing Ohio in Congress and as governor.
Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) said in a statement posted to social media that he was similarly “disappointed” in the decision to rename the mountain long named after “a proud Ohioan.”
“The naming of the mountain has been a topic of discussion in Congress for many years. This decision by the administration is yet another example of the President going around Congress,” Portman said. [emphasis added]
That is neatly consistent with this quote:
Senator Lisa Murkowski, who had pushed legislation for years to change the name, said Alaskans were "honored" to recognize the mountain as Denali — a change in tone for the Alaska Republican, who had spoken out against Obama's energy policies in anticipation of his visit to her State. [emphasis added]
Thus confirming that this is another Article I, Section 1 violation as well as what a cheap date Lisa Madcowski is.
In all candor, I really don't care what the tallest peak in North America is called. But the change is supposed to be made legislatively, not by imperial decree. And if the Ohio delegation had the clout to block it and remained steadfast that Mt. McKinley should remain Mt. McKinley, then either the Alaska delegation finds something to offer them that's worth relenting on changing the name, or else that's that.
And now here's a least one "GOP" senator who's fine as a fantastic frak with unconstitutional presidential decrees as long as they get her what she wants.
Perhaps there's an additional reason why The One is visiting Alaska. Anybody know if Michelle is accompanying him?
