The Real Difference Between the Democrats and Socialists

By Douglas V. Gibbs

The political debate has been teeming with conversation ever since Chris Mathews got Debbie Wasserman Schultz to dance around answering his question about the difference between Democrats and Socialists.

A good republican friend sent me the following:

The chairman of the Democratic party could not explain the difference between Socialists and Democrats. Here is the “difference”.

Socialists technically believe government should own the means of production, which means government-owned and operated steel mills, car companies, railroads, banks, etc. Democrats, by contrast, believe in nominal private ownership of the means of production, but with lots of subsidies, handouts, redistribution, protectionism, intervention, regulation, and bailouts. Under Democrats, we have moved from free markets to Government controlled hospitals, health clinics, energy companies, insurance companies, transportation companies, banks, and more.

In other words, government control of private business. So, in practice, there really is no difference.

I disagree.

Here is my answer. . .

There is a term for what the democrats believe.

While socialists believe that government should own the means of production, the concept where the means of production is controlled by government through heavy regulation, while allowing nominal private ownership is called "fascism."
